Celebrating Folk Art on the Silver Screen: CocoFilms at FIFA
We clearly remember the pleasant surprise of receiving an email inviting us to showcase our film "Another Feather in Her Bonnet" at the prestigious Festival International du Film sur l'Art (FIFA) in Montreal. Our film, first released in 2017, had already been featured in several film festivals around the world. It’s a project we are incredibly proud of and we were thrilled to share its message. The Script was written by Kent Monkman and Gisèle Gordon and directed by Aki Pagratis. It was produced in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Maison Jean Paul Gaultier and it stands as a testament to the power of artistic collaboration and innovation.
"Another Feather in Her Bonnet" delves into the symbolic union of two influential artists who challenge the notions of cultural appropriation through their work. This union, portrayed in the film, is not just a merger of styles but also a profound dialogue on identity, heritage, and artistic expression. The film captures the essence of folk art, which often remains underrepresented in traditional media, providing a vivid tableau of tradition meshed with contemporary relevance.
We were particularly honored to participate in FIFA because it’s renowned for its dedication to showcasing films that explore the vibrant world of art from diverse perspectives—the perfect platform for our film. Our film was part of the MODE VS. FOLKLORE, ENTRE TRADITIONS ET TRANSGRESSIONS: CARTE BLANCHE curated by Andreina Aveledo and shown at the Museum of Fine Arts of Montreal.
Aveledo describes her Carte Blanche event like this: "Behind the word fashion hides a spectrum of contrasting phenomena, ranging from the extravagance of ultra-luxury to the absurdity of fast fashion’s prêt-à-jeter. But we often forget that what we call fashion, perceived as ephemeral, actually embodies centuries of techniques, traditions, craftsmanship, hands at work, beliefs, and folklore."
She says that with the Carte Blanche selection, she wanted to focus on the fashion emerging from peripheral streets, replicating itself on the catwalks of haute couture in Paris or New York. It was an enriching experience to see our work among such inspiring contributions from around the world, each exploring the intersections of art and life in unique ways.
Our participation in FIFA is not just a milestone for CocoFilms but also a statement of our commitment to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of folk art. Through "Another Feather in Her Bonnet," we aim to continue this dialogue, inviting audiences to explore the layers of meaning and cultural significance that folk art holds.
